Looked over everything but still have some questions?

We've probably had them asked to us before, so here are some of our most common answers to the things people have wondered.

FAQs

Can we just go on the field trips?

We offer à la carte registration options if you would just like to participate in our Field Learning Activities (aka field trips)—or Physical Education Time or In-Person Classes.

Then, Lakeview Academy's formal school designation receives the best negotiated rates at each of our outing locations, so rates will always remain as low as possible for our families.

Is this a co-op?

Some of our registered families refer to us as that already. So if you'd like to think of us as a co-op, since we’re made up of homeschoolers, that is completely fine. But we like to think of ourselves as a microschool.

Our school, Lakeview Academy, is officially recognized by the Ohio Department of Education & Workforce as a Non-Chartered, Non-Public (NCNP) School—or an “08 School” in the Ohio homeschooling world. This is just another way to homeschool in this state with many benefits.

Why did you form this?

We set out to create a group of local homeschoolers to go on field trips together and create an overall community nearby. We also wanted to form something that brought people together but also had drop-off-class options, similar to post-secondary education models.

We began doing our due diligence and discovered many benefits to concurrently forming Lakeview Academy, and we would not have to minimize anything anyone was seeking.

This brought our dream to fruition in ways we never imagined!

What days and times do you meet?

Beginning in fall 2025, we will meet on Mondays between 9am and 3pm for In-Person Classes, Tuesdays between 12pm and 2pm for Physical Education Time, and Wednesdays between by 10am and 3pm for Field Learning Activities.

Do families stay with their students at all times?

Because we have medical forms filled out for each student in the event of emergencies away from their parent or guardian, families may utilize our programming as drop-off programs. At this time, however, we do require student transportation to and from all programming sites by family.

Please note: All staff and volunteers undergo and must pass background checks and will only be able to stay during In-Person Class days if they do.

Do you offer payment plans?

Yes, we offer payment plans. We do not want anyone who wants to join us to be unable to join us due to money constraints. We are also in the process of securing grant money and donations to offer scholarships in the near future.

If money is tight in your family, we are happy to work with you. Please just email us or send us an inquiry form outlining your needs. We’re always happy to help how we can!

Do we still need to notify our superintendent of our home-education?

That decision is up to you. If your student is enrolled with us and is from ages 5–18, we can report their enrollment to Lakeview Academy to your local district for you. This reporting is what could make you eligible to receive the tax advantages that attending the formally-recognized school offers.

Instead, you may send your notification to your local superintendent, but doing so would make you ineligible for the tax benefits of being on Lakeview Academy's official roster.

What is a Non-Chartered, Non-Public School?

Non-chartered, non-public (NCNP) schools are schools that, because of truly held religious beliefs, choose to not be chartered by the State of Ohio. More information can be found by visiting the Ohio Department of Education & Workforce website, including viewing Lakeview Academy on their list of recognized schools.

Is this secular or non-secular?

While our school, Lakeview Academy, was formed due to truly held religious beliefs where we choose not to be chartered by the State of Ohio, all of our teachings are secular in nature.

We accept anyone and everyone, and all of our offerings are fully inclusive for people of any background or belief.

Do students need to participate in state testing?

NCNP schools are not included in the mandates placed on chartered non-public or public schools. Students on the roster of Lakeview Academy are not required to take state testing, but of course, any family may choose to participate in them separate from us in their own capacity.

What about The LoCo Homies group?

That group exists as a way for all of us to hang out whenever we can. We invite you to join our Facebook group, and share different meetups you learn about or would like to arrange!

What ages can participate?

Families with children from birth to age 18 can participate with us in our Physical Education Time and Field Learning Activities. Children ages 5 on or before December 31 of that school year up to 18 can enroll in Lakeview Academy if you are interested in taking advantage of the tax benefits available to students of NCNP schools in Ohio.

Do I have to pay for ages under 5?

Since most of our Field Learning Activity locations charge for participants ages 2 and up, you do need to register your children ages 2 to 18 for Field Learning Activities and Physical Education Time.

However, for the Drop-Off Class days we will eventually have, we will only be able to accept ages 5 to 18. Anyone below that age will need to have a chaperone remain with them at all times.

What is your address?

Right now, we meet at the locations of our Field Learning Activities that are shared up to three months in advance with enrolled families. However, our home base for our In-Person Classes is in Lorain, Ohio, and the exact address will only shared with enrolled families for safety reasons.

Is there really a tax credit that could offset our payments toward you?

Yes! Families that enroll with Lakeview Academy can reap the benefits this Ohio tax credit can bring to them. There are income limits for both, so be sure your selections appropriately reflect your financial situation to gain the biggest benefit.

For more information, refer to O.R.C. 5747.75 and consult a tax professional.

What if we have a tradition of sending in our NOI with our kids?

You have two options for your children registered with us:

If you are not taking advantage of the tax benefits available by enrolling with Lakeview Academy, you can continue notifying your local superintendent of your intent to homeschool like you always have done.

Alternatively, if you would like to take advantage of the tax benefits available by enrolling with Lakeview Academy, your family's official enrollment letter needs to be mailed to your local district treasurer either by you or us.

Money is extremely tight right now. Do you offer any scholarships?

We are in the process of seeking grants and fundraising through various activities, and we hope to begin offering scholarships during the upcoming school year. But please reach out to us if money is the only reason you are not joining us this year, and we will work to make it possible for you.

Do you have any vaccination requirements for students?

We firmly believe in and support family choice surrounding any and all medical care for their children. While we do ask if vaccinations are up to date on our emergency medical form following registration, the two options are: up-to-date and exempt. We only need to know this in the event of a medical emergency where a child's chaperone cannot discuss information to emergency medical personnel. (But, hopefully, we never have a need for this.)

What if I have a question not listed here?
